They collected high-resolution data on demography, diet, gut flora, physical activity, and blood glucose levels of over 1000 participants in Switzerland and the Netherlands for two to four weeks between October 2018 and March 2023.

It enables study participants to collect daily in situ data using a smartphone app and wearable sensors.

The researchers assessed data quality and dependability to eliminate data quality problems.

Most nutritional epidemiology studies examined population-level effects of nutrition and a healthy diet, informing dietary guidelines.

Some recent research have linked microbiota composition to the health advantages of a nutritious diet, highlighting the promise of personalized nutrition.

All studies showing that tailored dietary recommendations work have addressed personal factors like gut microbiome compositions in isolation.

However, nutritional epidemiology needs a more holistic approach that considers lifestyle characteristics and other factors that affect the body's ability to benefit from diet.

Like a carbohydrate-rich diet, sedentary behavior is a risk factor for diabetics. Additionally, these patients' gut microbiomes may regulate their blood glucose response to meal consumption.
