When Jones was eventually accepted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992, it astonished him, even though no one else did.

It happened at the 1992 CMA Awards. With the success of "He Stopped Loving Her Today" in the 1980s pushing George back onto the charts for a string of singles and a new record label with MCA in the 1990s, 

Jones was experiencing a type of career comeback.

"I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair," a powerful song about defying retirement and continuing his career into old age,

was one of his biggest songs of the 1990s.
